There is something that feels a little sad from this piece. I think its from how the hands are lose around the baseball, even though its signed its a little like the kid has given up on it a little. the kid could also have been knocked out for all i know in a fight over the base ball/ fell over trying to catch it. But from the feeling of the picture its more motionless and thoughtful than that.
Your artist comments intrigue me, and also make me think of that song from rent...
